Mathematical Representations Deepen Understanding

The grade 5/6 class at Federal Public School is learning to represent and operate with decimal numbers in different ways. They were challenged to select an appropriate and efficient representation for solving the problem of the lesson.

-Mathematics curriculum strands B1 (Number Sense) & B2 (Operations)

  • Using manipulatives and representations to build deep understanding of decimal numbers, the students are able to solve challenging problems and prove their thinking.

  • When students work with tools like number lines and base ten blocks, their confidence grows and they became less afraid of making mistakes.

  • Students who make connections between different mathematical representations can begin to independently select which of these tools would be the most efficient for solving complex problems.
