From Land to Language

Students in Mrs. Kearns’ ENG2D/2P and NBE3U classes at ESCHS took their learning outdoors, exploring the land to gather inspiration and natural artifacts to compose poems reflecting on the theme of touched versus untouched land. To deepen the meaning of their compositions, students transformed their collected artifacts into creative collages that complemented their writing.

(Overall expectations: Writing 1, 2, 3, 4, NBE3U - Strand A)

  • By engaging in an authentic, hands-on learning experience, students are meeting high expectations in a diverse, dynamic environment.

  • Working outside the classroom and sharing their artifacts and collages fosters a sense of community, where each student’s voice and perspective is valued.

  • The process of collecting, composing poetry, and crafting collages invites reflection, innovation, and development of skills that extend beyond traditional tasks.
