French as a Second Language

  • This page is dedicated to resources that specifically support CEFR work and will be updated regularly.

  • For learning and resources tied more specifically to Mathematics or Literacy, please refer to those pages on the Educators’ Playground.

  • The CEFR is an internationally recognized standard for describing language proficiency. It provides clear, consistent levels—from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient)—that help educators understand and support language development in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Click the image for the principles of the action-oriented approach and for suggestions for the FSL classroom.

For Ontario teachers, CEFR is a valuable tool for:

    • Planning Instruction: CEFR levels guide differentiated strategies and resources for multilingual learners.

    • Connecting Globally: CEFR aligns with international benchmarks, making Ontario classrooms part of a broader language learning community.
