Bank of Canada Museum Supporting Educators with New Financial Literacy Requirements

The Bank of Canada Museum has created a series of lessons for K-8 that help educators to address the Financial Literacy Math expectations. Each lesson contains a description of the task, learning objectives, any required templates, and instructions for educators to follow while working through the activity with their students. Many of the lessons have cross curricular connections, such as to the health and social studies curriculum or to other math strands. Lessons are organized by grade or division and links to curriculum can be made by the educator.

Each lesson is designed to expose students to real-life scenarios, such as creating a budget and learning how to save money. Students will learn through fun scenarios, organizing a paper doll store where they will dress their avatar while learning how to make change, and planning a balanced meal while remaining on a budget.

Lessons that draw upon the lived experiences of children will develop a sense of belonging as they engage in games and activities that allow them to apply their experiences to new learning. Opportunities to work with Canadian currency, games to explore wants and needs, and even a chance to play a game while exploring the concept of trading; the activities are sure to engage all learners.

Each lesson invites students to learn through play, offering an opportunity to make decisions about real life topics, and develop future-ready skills while having fun! Explore saving and spending, determining unit cost, and even reviewing fractions, all this and more are part of the lessons offered by the Bank of Canada Museum.
