Civics and Citizenship
This lesson introduces students to the Constitution Express and the fight for Indigenous rights within the Canadian Constitution. Through videos, readings, and class discussions, students will explore key concepts such as self-government, self-determination, inherent rights, and sovereignty. Using mind maps and exit cards, they will demonstrate their understanding of governance systems and treaty relationships, with connections to Civics Strand B. An optional extension activity is included to deepen learning.
The goal of this resource is to support educators and learners as they explore the topic of Métis Governance in the classroom. Using a political inquiry approach it encourages students to think deeply about Métis nation-building today. Students will learn about Métis governance and citizenship, how these systems connect to federal and provincial governments, the role of political activism in asserting rights, and current issues facing the Métis Nation of Ontario.
