Expressions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Cultures, Grade 9

NAC 10

Barry Ace’s high school lesson, (re)Mapping Place, explores the politics of map-making and its role in the colonial erasure of Indigenous peoples. By deconstructing local maps and reimagining them using symbols from their own cultural heritage and lived experiences, students are encouraged to question dominant historical narratives and reflect on the power of place.

In this lesson students will be able to describe how various First Nations, Métis and Inuit artists use media arts to express and support Indigeneity and cultural identity by exploring two Indigenous photographers-Nadya Kwandibens and Terrance Houle. Students will engage in thinking routines and have the opportunity to upload a photo to highlight a part of their own culture or identity that makes them feel proud.

In this lesson, students will begin by learning about medicine wheels and the significance of the circle in Indigenous worldviews. They will then assess their own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, and create drawings that reflect what they would like to do to support balance in each of the four quadrants.
