MTH1W:
Data
D1. Collection, Representation, and Analysis of Data
D1.1 identify a current context involving a large amount of data, and describe potential implications and consequences of its collection, storage, representation, and use
D1.2 represent and statistically analyse data from a real-life situation involving a single variable in various ways, including the use of quartile values and box plots
Introducing Box Plots
In this lesson, students will analyze phone battery life data using methods of their choosing, then discuss their initial thinking as a class. The teacher will then lead a collaborative development of the concepts of quartiles, dot plots and box plots.
Key features:
Teacher moves: Includes a suggestions for co-developing the ideas with students and question prompts to deepen thinking.
Integration of Desmos: Students learn to use a digital tool for rapid visual representations, allowing for deeper discussion about data interpretation.
Consolidation & Assessment: Includes group and individual consolidation, guided note-taking, “Check Your Understanding” questions, and an exit ticket to assess student learning and support meaningful reflection.

D1.3 create a scatter plot to represent the relationship between two variables, determine the correlation between these variables by testing different regression models using technology, and use a model to make predictions when appropriate
